Time for The TruTh on The Lee VaLLey Dam

How the Waimea Dam could affect you, your family, your home and its value

There is an active earthquake fault line on either side of the proposed dam site in the Lee Valley!

You should be deeply concerned

If the dam failed catastrophically and released its 13 million cubic metres of water, it would hit the Brightwater township in a tidal wave flooding half of the town to depths ranging from 0.5 to 3 m and moving at a velocity of up to 2 metres per second.

We are here to raise public awareness, release documents and expose wrongdoings backed by interested parties and the Tasman District Council

1

The Earthquake Risk

Dr Mike Johnston (2007) in his report to council states: The Waimea-Flaxmore and Alpine Faults exist either side of the dam’s location. He states, “There is a high probability of earthquake rupture on the alpine fault within the planned life of the Waimea Dam.”
GNS Science reported (2018) that the Alpine Fault is overdue to rupture at an 8.2 magnitude earthquake level. This would be far greater than the Christchurch or Kaikoura earthquakes.

2

You should be deeply concerned

The dam is to be unmanned once built and it would be “impossible to know” how to evacuate the whole township within 20 minutes, because Brightwater would be completely inundated with floodwater.

3

Now that the dam is going ahead...

Tasman District Council, has the right to register the potential inundation (flooding) risk onto each individual property title on the flooding map via a Land Information Memorandum (LIM) .

What would your property be worth? Would it be saleable? Will it be insurable? And if so, at what cost?

4

Is it all too late? Perhaps not...

Work has commenced on a dam on the Lee River, despite considerable public opposition. Expenditure of a considerable sum of public money will benefit only a few, resulting in a dam of questionable utility, with significant risks to those downstream.

It makes sense to put a stop to this nonsense, even at this late stage!!!

Empower yourself and your community!

The Mayor, Richard Kempthorne, and Deputy Mayor, Tim King, have long been committed enthusiasts, and recognised their serious conflict of interest. But that did not prevent them from casting key votes in Council – and they got away with it too!

$50m liability hidden from TDC ratepayers!!!

Without consultation, TDC approved a liability of $50,000,000 to protect the financial interests of private investors, placing ratepayers’ funds at unreasonable risk. This liability is unfair, non-transparent, and can be removed.
